Stranger and Alien

Once a week, you will hear from someone on our Protege team. There are eight people in the Protege program this year, all of whom are involved in a different part of our church. Hopefully, hearing from them will give you some idea of how our residency program is helping serve Christ Community.

Here is our eighth post from Michael Mann:

Hello Patrons!

My name is Michael Mann and there is really one major thing that must be learned about me. After learning this fact, you will basically know all about me. This fact will allow you to make an immediate judgment on whether you love or hate me. I AM AN AUBURN FAN WHO HATES GEORGIA! If this confuses or surprises you then all I can say is “Welcome to the club”. It really is a tough life for a young Auburn fan who attends the University of Georgia. Take yesterday for instance: surrounded by a sea of red and black, I looked around only to realize that I was the only person on campus wearing a Cam Newton jersey. The feelings of loneliness and estrangement again crept in…Much like the men and women in Hebrews 11 who long for a better homeland, I find myself longing to be in the collegiate paradise of Auburn. But until my dream is fulfilled, I live as a stranger and alien in Athens, GA.

On a more serious note, I am deeply blessed to have been brought to Athens. I am 22 years old and am at this moment 59 days away from graduation! (Not that I have an elephant-sized countdown clock on my wall or anything but…). I will be graduating with a degree in Communication Studies. I plan to serve God with my life - no clue what that will look like but I am trusting Him to reveal that in His time.

I am only about 3 months into Protégé, and God has already used it in a huge way in my life. While I am currently helping out with small odds and ends for the worship gathering each week, my main area of service currently is through running the ProPresenter and projection. One of my greatest fears is leading and trying big things that are accompanied by a risk of failure. But God has been showing me that He uses weak people (that’d be me) to do big things for His glory. I have been able to see His work in action through doing ProPresenter work with Apple computer equipment (which I am not well versed in) and through taking part in a service area that everyone will notice if it gets messed up. The recent Love Life Conference featuring Mark Driscoll was a great learning experience, as I found myself running ProPresenter and videos for over 1,000 people all day. But God really showed up and gave me favor when I was in way over my head. Is has been so encouraging to see how He has worked in this area of my life recently, dealing with me favorably because of Jesus. I will be taking on a larger role in Protégé after graduation, but for now I am serving and learning what it looks like to be a leader who serves in humility so that God alone gets the glory.

John 3:30.
