An Interview with Matt Adair

Your six-word memoir? Joy. Rest. Courage. Generosity. Real life.

Following Jesus means…? Loving God and loving my neighbor in everyday life.

What role does your faith play in your work? This might seem obvious for a pastor, but I would probably lose my sanity if I didn’t believe that God is always at work in anyone and everyone. And I have almost ten years of evidence that I do struggle to believe this, and it shows up in anger, bitterness, anxiety, fear and the occasional desire to ‘have a normal job’.

Describe a snapshot of a joyful moment in your life? My five-year old doesn’t feel good and he wakes up, finds me, and crawls in my lap whimpering. So I’m rocking him, and asking him what he needs. And when he says ‘Dada’ (the name he calls me)? I can live with that. And I think that’s joy - even when life is hard, if we have our Dada/Dad/Father, we’ll be ok.

What is the most deeply satisfying part of your everyday life? The moment when someone leads in a new way or new direction. Leadership is about loving people enough to take the first step. It’s inconvenient and courageous and rather like Jesus.

What inspires you to be courageous - to show up and be yourself - day in and day out? The practical reality that I am enough; not because of self-delusion, but because I believe that God places us where we are is woven into what is needed by the people he puts around us.

What is the most generous thing someone has done for you in the last month? Every day between February 1 and Valentine’s Day, my wife left me a note about one reason she loves me. It cost her less than a dollar, a few minutes of time, and meant the world to me.

Do you have a mantra, Bible verse or famous quote for following Jesus with joy, rest, courage and generosity? A new one for me in the past few weeks has been the words of an angel to Gideon in Judges 6:12 - ‘The LORD is with you.’ That’s the secret to life.

What is your favorite word? Touchdown.

What is your least favorite word? Auburn.

What sound or noise do you love? Rain on a window.

What sound or noise do you hate? Fingernails on a chalkboard.

A song/band/type of music you’d risk wreck and injury to turn off when you hear it? Anything involving Pitbull or Ke$ha. So you can imagine how thrilled I am about their song, 'Timber'.

Favorite show on television? Of all time? Friday Night Lights. Right now? The West Wing (three cheers for Netflix binge watching)

Favorite movie? The Empire Strikes Back

What are you grateful for? Mornings when I don’t have to get kids up and off to school.

If you could have anything put on a t-shirt, what would it be? The duck that Zack Morris rescues in an environmentally conscious episode of Saved By The Bell.

Favorite meal? Any meal that involves my wife, a glass of wine and unhurried time.

A talent you wish you had? Playing the guitar. Electric, not acoustic. Very loudly.

Favorite song/band? ‘Walk’ by Foo Fighters and ‘New Years Day’ by U2

What are you reading? Leaders Eat Last by Simon Sinek

What’s something about you that would surprise us? How flexible I am. No, seriously. I’m rather bendy for a man who’s pushing 40.
